How Long Does Drywall Repair Take? A Realistic Timeline

Why Most Repairs Span Two Visits

Joint compound has to dry before it can be coated again or sanded. In Wilmington's humid climate, that usually means overnight between coats. So even a small repair that takes 90 minutes of actual hands-on work usually spans two visits — the first to cut, patch, tape, and apply the first two coats; the second to apply the final coat, sand, and texture match. This is normal and unavoidable with traditional joint compound. The good news: setting-type compounds can speed this up for emergency repairs.

Small Patches: 1–2 Days Elapsed

A single hole patch up to 6 inches with texture matching is usually 90 minutes the first day and 60 minutes the next day. Total elapsed time: about 24 hours. If we use fast-setting compound (90-minute set), we can do it all in a single 3-hour visit, but the texture match is slightly less consistent. Most customers choose the two-visit option.

Medium Repairs: 2–3 Days Elapsed

A repair involving multiple holes in one room, or a larger single hole that needs a full drywall patch (8–24 inches), takes 2–3 hours the first day, an overnight dry, another hour the second day for the third coat, and finally 1 hour the third day for sanding and texture. Most of these jobs are scheduled across three consecutive days.

Water Damage: 5–10 Days Elapsed

Water damage takes longer because the framing has to dry before we rebuild. We typically cut out wet material on day 1, run a fan in the cavity for 24–48 hours, install new drywall on day 3 or 4, tape and float over three days, and sand and texture on the final day. The whole process usually spans 7–10 days end to end.

Whole Room Hang and Finish: 5–7 Days

A 12×12 bedroom is usually 1 day to hang, 3–4 days to tape and finish (with overnight drying between coats), and 1 day for sanding and texture. Total: about 6 working days. Crews are usually on-site for 4 of those days; the others are drying days when no work happens.

What Slows Things Down

Three factors stretch every drywall schedule. Humidity is the biggest — when relative humidity stays above 80% (common in Wilmington summers), compound dries 20–40% slower. Cold temperatures below 55°F also extend drying. And large repairs in unheated spaces (garages, attics) take longer year-round.

What Speeds Things Up

Setting-type compounds (Easy Sand 5, 20, 45, 90) that chemically set in a fixed time can compress drying from overnight to under two hours. We use these for emergency repairs and tight schedules, with the trade-off that they're harder to sand and texture match. For most residential repairs, traditional compounds give better results and the extra day isn't a problem.

Getting an Accurate Time Estimate

When you call us at (910) 555-0184, we ask three questions: what's damaged, how big is it, and what's the texture? With those answers we can give you a realistic schedule on the phone. We don't quote one-day jobs that we know will take three days — we tell you the truth upfront so you can plan.
